I once asked a friend how much money would make her feel successful. She said ₹25 crore. My former head of risk said ₹100 crore. No, I am not building an argument to measure how much is too much. We all have a number we're working toward. What keeps us going isn't the number. It's how we feel on the way. And if nothing we've done so far feels like enough, we always feel behind. To change that mindset, we need to understand that progress is not necessarily visible success, but a change in the capacity to produce better outcomes. Success is an event, a number. Progress is transformation.
We treat success as the only proof of having made progress. In reality, success is a lagging indicator. It tells us what has already become visible, not what is currently developing. In most desired pursuits, the interval between effort and success is long. That interval is the progress. Success measures where we are. Progress measures whether we are becoming more capable of getting there. If we mistake the absence of visible evidence for the absence of progress, we risk losing valuable work before its effects have had time to compound. During that interval, learning, skill, judgment, resilience and understanding may be accumulating without producing an immediately recognisable outcome, but it’s still progress because it increases our capacity to succeed.
Back to my friend. She is one of the most capable people I know, yet she feels she will only have arrived at ₹25 crore. So she is perpetually left with the feeling that she is behind.
The numbers game
I asked her why ₹25 crore. Why not more, or less? She didn't have a clear answer. The number probably started as a feeling: safety, freedom, parents who never have to worry, the respect she wanted. But after a while, we forget what the number was supposed to do for us. We stop asking, “What would this actually change in my life?” and start asking, “How do I get there faster?” The number itself becomes the goal, replacing the safety, freedom, peace, or pride we wanted from it.
Confusing evidence for reality
I read a hundred pages today. That's the win, even if I'm nowhere near a hundred books this year. Those pages change my vocabulary, my judgment, the patterns I notice. None of it shows. It happens underground, and we miss it because we only look for what's visible.
Following borrowed timelines
Life does not give clear everyday answers. We can work hard, make a difficult decision, learn something useful, fix a problem, or move a thing forward and still have nothing impressive to show for it. Then you open your phone, and someone else has the answer you are looking for. A raise. A house. A promotion. A funding round. Revenue. A new job. You do not just see their win. You start doing the maths. Their age. Their salary. Their speed.
When your own progress is hard to see, other people’s success starts to feel like evidence about your failure. This can be envy. It can also be shame: your work suddenly looks small next to someone else’s highlight. A 2026 meta-analysis of 54 samples and 36,583 people found that online upward comparison was most strongly linked to social-evaluative negative emotions like feeling inferior, inadequate, embarrassed, or judged. The fear is not only that you are behind. It is that other people can see it.
Interval between effort and evidence
This is the stretch where the work is real but the proof hasn't arrived. This is where most people lose themselves because we don't see evidence that our effort is working. The problem is that our mind weighs a setback more heavily than a comparable step forward. One rejection, one bad metric, one failed experiment can erase a week of useful movement in our head. So the interval between effort and evidence does not feel neutral. It feels like we are losing.
So what can she do?
She can't speed up the wait, but there is a better way to measure progress than public outcomes.
Keep a ledger. A 2016 review of 138 studies found that people who tracked their progress were more likely to reach their goals, especially when they wrote it down. Record your small wins.
Long apprenticeships are normal. Viet Thanh Nguyen wrote for two decades before The Sympathizer. He saw those years as learning how to be a writer. Ben Silbermann's Pinterest was tiny for years. Marques Brownlee made video after video before anyone watched. The result arrives so late that the early years look empty in hindsight. They were not empty.
Rest is part of it. Early work usually happens around the edges of life: before work, after work, in fragments nobody sees. The side-hustle lie says every hour off puts you behind. It doesn't. A life outside the work is allowed.
Seasons change. Some are productive, some are dry. You can't stop other people posting their wins, but you can refuse to let them set your pace. Every harvest needs time to ripen. Don't let anxiety pick it early.
Measure what leads. Revenue, followers, titles and exits tell you what the world has already rewarded. They arrive too late to guide an ordinary day. Ask instead: what tells me I'm getting better at the work before the result shows up?
Keep the scoreboard internal. Compare yourself to who you were a year ago, not to the loudest person in your feed.
So, to my friend: you aren't behind. It just feels that way, because progress was never linear. The interval between effort and outcome hurts. I get it. But that interval is where the work is happening.
Great Monday morning read!
This was stupendous. Really interesting and helpful. A great read.
